2026 Mid-Year State of Cinema Report
All genres welcome: Diverse slate drives record admissions
The first half of 2026 has reinforced what the industry has been hoping for: Moviegoing is back in a big way. Strong family releases, breakout original films, internet-driven phenomena, and a steady cadence of content have combined to create one of the healthiest box office environments since the pandemic.
While box office revenue is often the headline metric, admissions remain the clearest indicator of audience momentum. Nearly 390,000,000 tickets have been sold in the first half of the year.
The takeaway is clear: More people are choosing the theatrical experience, and they are doing so across a wider variety of films than we've seen in recent years.
“People have couch saturation or couch fatigue,” said actor Colin Farrell, speaking to Variety. “As much as it’s nice to stay at home and be entertained by the quality stuff that’s coming through the streaming services, I think people realize that it’s actually lovely to call an Uber and plan an evening around going to a movie theater.”
A healthy box office needs every type of movie

One of the defining characteristics of 2026 so far is balance. Audiences have embraced movies across every MPA rating. Family films continue to provide the foundation, but PG-13 blockbusters, horror, thrillers, and adult dramas have all found meaningful audiences.
A successful theatrical marketplace depends on having something for everyone — and 2026 is proving exactly that.
Family films continue to lead — but they're not alone

The year's two biggest releases are, unsurprisingly, family favorites: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Toy Story 5. Together, they captured 20% of admissions, whereas last year’s two biggest films at the mid-year point, A Minecraft Movie and Lilo & Stitch, captured 28% of admissions, indicating a more diverse slate has been able to succeed in 2026.
Close behind are two successful PG-13 titles — Michael and Project Hail Mary — demonstrating that audiences continue to support compelling event films beyond traditional family fare. (In comparison, the highest-ranking PG-13 title of 2025, Captain America: Brave New World, was only able to capture 5% of admissions.)
Overall, PG and PG-13 movies represent seven of the year's Top 10 films and account for nearly half of all admissions, underscoring the importance of broad audience appeal.
The composition of the Top 10 also highlights another encouraging trend: Audiences are supporting both established franchises and original stories, creating a healthier theatrical ecosystem.
Rating the audience: How MPA classifications shaped 2026's moviegoer demographics

The strength of the box office isn't measured exclusively by how many people attend — it's also measured by who is attending.
Nearly half of all moviegoers in 2026 fall within the highly sought-after Adults 18-34 demographic, with women representing a slightly larger share than men (25% vs. 21%).
Given the dominance of family films during the first half of the year, it's not surprising that adults in their parenting years are leading attendance. At the same time, the diversity of releases has attracted audiences across virtually every age group.
For advertisers, this continued diversity is one of cinema's greatest strengths: Each film reaches a unique audience, while the medium as a whole consistently delivers broad national scale.
Internet vs. ideology: How Obsession and Backrooms conquered different demographics simultaneously

One of the more interesting stories of the first half was the simultaneous success of Obsession and Backrooms, two movies by Internet natives who cut their creative teeth online. Released during similar timeframes, both films benefited from exceptional word of mouth, proving that audiences will make room for multiple successful titles when each offers something distinct.
Although Obsession narrowly outperformed Backrooms in admissions, the audiences looked noticeably different.
Backrooms, inspired by Kane Parson’s web series with its roots in creepypasta culture, attracted a younger crowd: 20% of its audience was under age 18, compared with 13% for Obsession.
Meanwhile, YouTube creator Curry Barker’s well-made, low-budget horror Obsession, with its feminist undertones and recognizable “nice guy” resonated more strongly with women ages 18-34.
These differences reinforce how even films within the same rating category can reach very different consumer segments.
The supporting cast matters: How a robust mid-tier slate sustained 2026's box office momentum

While the Top 10 movies accounted for 57% of all admissions, the remaining titles played an equally important role in maintaining audience momentum throughout the first half of the year.
Movies ranked 11-20 — including Scary Movie, Disclosure Day, Wuthering Heights, and Masters of the Universe — collectively generated another 22% of admissions.
These mid-tier performers kept audiences engaged between major tentpole releases and reinforced the importance of a consistent release calendar. The healthiest years at the box office aren't built solely on billion-dollar blockbusters—they're built on depth.
All bets are on 2026
The box office boom is far from over.
Domestic box office revenue has already surpassed $5 billion, over halfway towards the $9.8-9.9 billion forecasts our 2025 cinema report noted for 2026. The year is on pace to become the strongest since the pandemic reshaped the industry.
The second half of the year features one of the most anticipated release schedules in recent memory, led by brainy blockbuster The Odyssey, along with several major franchise and holiday releases still to come.
If the first six months have proven anything, it's that audiences continue to value the shared theatrical experience. When studios deliver a steady mix of family films, event blockbusters, original stories, horror, and adult dramas, moviegoers continue to show up — and that's exactly what has made the first half of 2026 such a remarkable success.
