With the first half of the year now complete, we can confidently say the 2026 box office is on a roll. The domestic box office has reached $4.6 billion — nearly 15% ahead of last year — representing almost $600 million in incremental revenue. Strong family films, event movies, and sustained holdovers have all contributed towards fueling one of the healthiest theatrical runs in recent years.

Girl of steel, box office of silver: Supergirl opens soft

This weekend saw the debut of Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, of House of the Dragon fame, faces off against an alien bounty hunter played by Jason Mamoa. While it couldn't unseat Toy Story 5, which comfortably held onto the #1 spot in its second weekend, Supergirl opened to $37 million. A superhero film hasn’t crossed the the billion-dollar mark since Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, but this is still a soft result by industry standards.

Reviews by both critics and audiences were mixed, with Supergirl earning a B- CinemaScore. The performance continues a trend of moviegoers becoming increasingly selective with comic book films: Recognizable characters alone are no longer enough to drive blockbuster openings. Strong word of mouth and a compelling reason to see a film in theaters have become increasingly important.

The final stunt flops: Jackass: Best and Last crashes with $8.4 million as nostalgia proves it can't carry the pain

Jackass: Best and Last also opened this weekend, generating just $8.4 million, despite opening in more than 2,800 theaters. This is notably well below Jackass Forever's $23 million debut in 2022.

Critics largely viewed the film as a heartfelt farewell to the franchise, replacing the outrageous stunts of earlier entries with a nostalgic celebration of a 25-year legacy. While many appreciated the emotional sendoff, others felt the heavy use of archival footage made it feel more like a retrospective than a new installment. The results reinforce that nostalgia can be a powerful ingredient, but it isn't enough on its own without a fresh theatrical hook.

The clear winner of the weekend, as we’ve seen most weekends with a great family film out, was Toy Story 5. Now playing in more than 4,500 theaters — nearly 1,000 more locations than Supergirl — the film has already surpassed $300 million domestically and is approaching $600 million worldwide after just two weeks. It captured 54% of admissions in its second weekend, far ahead of Supergirl’s 18%.

Its success reflects several powerful audience trends coming together: multigenerational nostalgia, a timely story centered on kids' relationships with technology versus traditional play, and broad appeal across families, teens, and adults who grew up with the franchise. Bringing back Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton also reinforced confidence among longtime fans, while Taylor Swift's involvement has helped broaden the film's cultural reach beyond traditional family audiences.

Anime's moment of truth: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity proves passionate fandoms buy in

The final new entry into the Top 10 is Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity. The film is based on the hit Japanese anime series of the same title and serves as the culmination of one of anime's most influential franchises, adapting the final arc from Tite Kubo's original manga.

Its appearance in the Top 10 is another reminder of anime's growing strength at the domestic box office. What was once considered a niche category has become a reliable driver of theatrical attendance, with passionate fan communities turning these releases into must-see theatrical events. Similar to recent concert films and fan-driven franchises, anime audiences continue to demonstrate that highly engaged fandom can translate into strong opening weekends and meaningful box office results, even for titles with relatively limited theatrical runs.

One nation, under Minions: Minions and Monsters eyes $80 million Independence Day weekend opening

Looking ahead to this weekend, Minions and Monsters is expected to provide Toy Story 5 with its first real competition since opening. Despite being the seventh in the franchise, critics see Minions and Monsters as one of the best in Illumination’s catalog, with an early score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Current projections are for an $80 million three-day opening. However, the Independence Day holiday may create an unusual attendance pattern this year. With July 4th falling on a Saturday — traditionally the biggest moviegoing day of the week — many consumers are expected to split their time between theaters and celebrations surrounding America's 250th Anniversary, potentially shifting more movie attendance toward Friday and Sunday.

Also opening over the holiday is Young Washington, a patriotic historical drama backed by Angel Studios that chronicles George Washington's life before the American Revolution and the presidency. Early estimates put the film in the $15 million-plus range, offering an alternative for audiences looking for a holiday-themed theatrical experience.
