New to the top five this week is You, Me & Tuscany, a classic, low-stakes romantic comedy, starring Halle Bailey (Anna) and Regé-Jean Page (Michael). A little lie turns into a big problem when Anna gets caught crashing at a villa in Italy. While critics are mixed on the story’s originality, its winning points for its reputation as a “sweet-natured” throwback and managed 6% of admissions. It opened just shy of $8M — slightly soft, but largely in line with expectations for the genre in today’s market, where rom-coms tend to skew more toward streaming unless they find a breakout hook.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continued its box office domination, taking in 61% of admissions and 54% of revenue this weekend. Notably, it dropped less than 50% from its opening, whereas The Super Mario Bros. Movie fell under 40% in its second weekend in 2023. While comparisons are inevitable, the calendar isn’t identical. Easter timing shifted this year, impacting school breaks and family availability. Even so, these 2026 holds are still highly impressive and reinforce just how powerful family-friendly franchises remain. It’s another strong signal that, when the right title hits, audiences will show up, boding well for the broader theatrical market heading into summer.

Stage, scares and suspense: BTS, Faces of Death and Exit 8 enter the conversation

While fans of the Korean boy band BTS stood in the rain to see the group’s first full-blown concert since 2022, Americans watched from the comfort of their local theaters. BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’ in Goyang: Live Viewing, a one-night, event-style theatrical experience garnered the sixth spot in the admissions pyramid. The impact of a single showing underscores the continued viability of alternative content in theaters. All eyes will be on next weekend’s BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’ in Japan: Live Viewing to see if the momentum continues or even builds, if it can benefit from strong fan-driven urgency.

The 2026 reimagining of Faces of Death, directed by Daniel Goldhaber, leans heavily into modern horror trends, moving away from the original 1978 shockumentary format and into a meta-slasher built around internet culture. Led by Barbie Ferreira, the story follows a content moderator uncovering a series of videos that may depict real murders inspired by the infamous original. Critically, the film has landed in the “mixed to generally positive” range, holding around a 70% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its footprint of 1600 theaters is middle of the road, so a number seven box office spot and total take of $1.7M is not surprising.

On the other end of the spectrum, Exit 8 quietly overperformed relative to its scale. Opening in just 495 theaters, it pulled in $1.4M, a solid per-theater average that points to strong demand within a targeted audience. The film has earned a “Certified Fresh” designation on Rotten Tomatoes, with outlets like Rolling Stone and IndieWire praising it as one of the more effective video game adaptations to date, largely due to its ability to sustain tension through minimalist storytelling and production design.

More broadly, Exit 8 highlights an ongoing trend: smaller, concept-driven adaptations can break through when they stay true to the core experience of the source material rather than over-scaling. As Hollywood continues to mine video games for IP, success stories like this suggest there’s real upside in disciplined budgets and focused creative execution, not just blockbuster ambition.

Two in-your-face options on deck

Looking ahead, next weekend brings a notable tonal shift with Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. This R-rated reimagining moves away from the action-adventure roots of past entries and leans heavily into visceral horror, drawing clear comparisons to Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise. Early critical reactions have been harsh but consistent, describing the film as “disturbing,” “intense,” and unapologetically graphic. That said, horror audiences are often critic-proof, and the genre’s built-in fan base should help it carve out a solid debut. It is currently tracking for a $15M opening.

Also out this weekend is Normal, directed by Ben Wheatley and written by Derek Kolstad (John Wick), based on a story by Kolstad and Bob Odenkirk. Notable for being Magnolia Pictures’ widest release in its 24-year history, it's projected to be an indie action success, with an estimated opening weekend box office of around $10 -$12M. Reviews describe it as an over-the-top, ultra-violent action comedy that positions star Bob Odenkirk as a legitimate action star. It currently holds a 79% approval on Rotten Tomatoes.

Beyond that, the late-April and early-summer corridor is shaping up to be increasingly competitive, with studios stacking a mix of horror, action, and early family titles to build momentum ahead of the traditional blockbuster season. If The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues to hold and even one or two of these upcoming releases break out, the industry could be looking at a much-needed sustained run of strong weekends rather than isolated spikes.
