The box office had a quiet weekend, which is not surprising for Labor Day. Historically, this weekend doesn't tend to be a major box office driver, but the overall picture remains positive. Year-to-date, the box office is just shy of $6 Billion and is up +4% from a year ago. Things are looking up with the upcoming release of The Conjuring: Last Rites and other anticipated titles.

Weapons has proven its staying power, reclaiming the #1 spot after briefly slipping last week. With a strong weekend pull of $10.4M, it’s enjoying its third #1 finish in just four weeks. This rare feat for an original horror film is a testament to strong word-of-mouth and a clear audience appetite for new genre fare.

One of the most interesting stories of the weekend was the re-release of Jaws. Despite being 50 years old, the classic film landed at #2 in revenue with $8.2M, showcasing the enduring power of the theater experience. Its strong performance, particularly with premium ticket pricing for its 3D re-release, proves that half-century-old movies can still make a splash in the modern box office landscape.

Among the new releases, Caught Stealing had a respectable opening at #3 in admissions. Its broad cast, including Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz, gave it strong appeal, and while audience reception was mixed, critics were generally positive. Another new debut, The Roses, had a softer opening but is part of a slate of new content helping to keep the market active.

Looking Ahead: Horror and Broadway to Boost the Box Office!

The box office is set to rebound with several highly anticipated titles this weekend. The Conjuring: Last Rites is expected to open with around $50M, a great number for the horror genre, which continues to be one of the most reliable in genres.

Also returning is Hamilton, Disney’s filmed version of the Broadway hit. Even though it's been streaming on Disney+ since 2020, its limited theatrical re-release is projected to deliver a respectable $6M+, proving that live-event style films can find a dedicated audience on the big screen.

Further down the line, September looks promising with titles like Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and the anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle. These titles, along with The Conjuring, are expected to help keep the box office trajectory steady and build momentum for the fourth quarter.
