The weekend box office saw a slight cool down, which is normal. August through October are historically softer months for moviegoing, so a few quieter weekends are to be expected. The bigger picture remains very positive: the industry is still well ahead of last year's pace.

Year-to-date box office revenue now stands at $5.7B, a +5.2% increase over the same period in 2024. This signals that momentum is holding strong even as we enter the fall slowdown.

Weapons continues its impressive run, holding onto the #1 spot for the second week in a row. It pulled in an additional $24.4M and accounted for roughly 28% of admissions this weekend. Its strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews are propelling it toward the $100M domestic milestone, an excellent achievement for an original horror release. Impressively, the film dropped less than 50% week-over-week, showcasing its staying power.

In second place, Freakier Friday held on with solid numbers, benefiting from its multigenerational appeal. Nobody 2 debuted at #3 with a respectable opening, offering a great counterpoint to the horror-heavy competition. The film’s positive reviews from both critics and audiences could give it legs in the coming weeks.

While the top 10 for admissions and box office revenue were mostly consistent, some of the middle rankings were mixed up, which can be attributed to ticket pricing. It is interesting to note that the re-release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made it into the admissions top 10, highlighting the enduring appeal of classic titles.

Looking Ahead: Niche Releases and the Promise of Fall

Next weekend brings only one notable new release, Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t, a noir detective comedy. Expectations are modest, but with a more promising slate of titles on the horizon—including The Roses, Caught Stealing, and a reimagined Toxic Avenger—the fall season is set to deliver more strong performances. All eyes will also be on The Conjuring sequel on September 5, a franchise with a proven track record of strong openings and staying power in the horror space.
