The box office saw a quieter pace this weekend, which is to be expected as we move further into the historically softer months of autumn, though anticipation for holiday releases is building. Year-to-date, the box office remains strong at $6.6B, maintaining a +3% lead over last year's revenue pace.

The past weekend saw the premiere of Tron: Ares, the third installment in Disney’s iconic sci-fi franchise, which secured the #1 position with $33.2M in revenue and 42% of admissions. While the film’s opening fell below high-end expectations, its visual style and recognizable brand name successfully galvanized core fans. Given Disney's typical long-tail strategy—including premium formats and tie-ins—Tron: Ares is still expected to find its footing and build an audience over time.

Securing the #2 spot was Roofman, a quirky dark comedy that debuted strongly with $8.1M and 11% of admissions. The film benefited from glowing reviews (boasting an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes) and excellent chemistry between its bankable leads, demonstrating that critically praised, original concepts can still break through in a competitive market.

Rounding out the top new releases was Souls on Fire, an inspirational drama that debuted to $2.8M. This true-story adaptation struck an emotional chord with its faith-based audience, showcasing the appeal of heartfelt, family-oriented content in the marketplace.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez’s Kiss of the Spiderwoman opened in a limited release, landing at #13. The strategy here appears deliberate: A limited rollout to build buzz and awards-season momentum before going wide in early 2026. Musicals often use this strategy (La La Land and Chicago being earlier examples), so its early critical reception could dictate how widely it expands.

Looking Ahead: Blockbuster Sequels and Star-Powered Originals

This coming weekend promises to shake up the box office. Horror fans will be turning out for Black Phone 2, which is anticipated to debut around the original’s $23M opening, promising a scarier and more complex sequel.

The highly anticipated Good Fortune—a mashup action-comedy with a heavy name cast including Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen, and Margot Robbie—is set to open between $12–18M. Early reviews are promising, calling it "weirdly charming and refreshingly original." These new releases, alongside perennial favorites like The Conjuring: Last Rites (still a strong performer in the top 10), are poised to keep the box office energized as we look forward to the holiday season.
