Even with a slightly quieter weekend, the box office continues to impress! Year-to-date grosses now stand at a fantastic $2.6 Billion+, a great +15% increase from a year ago. May 2025 is currently pacing at a remarkable +38% ahead of last year, a testament to the industry's vibrant health. We're seeing excellent staying power from current hits, with A Minecraft Movie, now in its fourth week, being the only film older than a month still in the top 10 – a clear indicator of the continued draw of family-friendly titles and engaging new content.

As anticipated, Thunderbolts* held its top spot at the box office. While its weekend performance was off by -56% from last week, this drop is consistent with what we've seen from major blockbusters in the past, including Avengers: Endgame in 2019, so it's well within expectations.

Sinners continues its exceptional run, now in its fourth week. The film only dropped -54% from its opening, a fantastic hold for a film of its kind, and it still maintains an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. This truly highlights its strong legs and enduring appeal.

This weekend also welcomed three new titles that performed as expected. Clown in a Cornfield led the new releases, demonstrating the continued interest in the horror genre. Shadow Force and Fight or Flight also debuted, adding to the variety of cinematic choices. While the new titles collectively contributed 8% of admissions and 9% of dollars, the top three films—Thunderbolts*, Sinners, and A Minecraft Movie—accounted for a dominant 72% of admissions and 74% of total dollars, showcasing their significant impact.

Looking Ahead:

This coming weekend brings some new releases that could further energize the box office. Final Destination: Bloodlines, a highly anticipated horror franchise entry, is expected to perform strongly, with predictions possibly reaching $35M. This could be a pleasant surprise for 2025, especially given the franchise's successful history.

Also opening is Hurry Up Tomorrow, a unique thriller starring The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan, and Riley Keough. This companion piece to The Weeknd's album is designed to offer fans an immersive experience and is generating strong reviews within the music community. It's an exciting example of artists pushing creative boundaries!

And of course, the highlight of the coming week is Memorial Day Weekend! All indicators point to an easy $200M+ weekend, promising a phenomenal boost to the box office. We're set for a weekend with something for everyone, with highly anticipated titles ensuring a strong close to the month!
