It was a record-breaking weekend at the box office. Fueled by Spider-Man: Brand New Day and helped by the continuous success of The Odyssey, the weekend box office ending on Sunday, August 2 broke the previous record set back in 2019, pulling in over $436M domestically.

Year to date the box office sits at over $6B, nearly $1B more than last year at this time, and up by 16%.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day made history by bringing in $360M in just 3 days. When compared to the 2021 opening of Spider-Man: No Way Home, that's a $100M+ gain. Add in the international box office and the movie is very quickly nearing the $1 billion mark.

85% of the weekend’s overall admissions were won by Spider-Man, as the film opened in 4,662 theaters domestically. 57% of the audience was male versus 43% female, and 21% were under the age of 18. Just over half the audience was made up of 18–34-year-olds, with 18–24-year-olds making up nearly a quarter.

With great marketing comes great box office

What fueled the extraordinary success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day? It was the perfect combination of star power, pent-up audience demand, strategic marketing, franchise goodwill, and strong audience reception.

The returning trio of Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon brought years of emotional investment from fans, allowing the film to build on one of the MCU's most beloved on-screen dynamics. With several years having passed since Peter Parker's last outing, audiences viewed Brand New Day as a major cinematic event rather than just another superhero sequel.

Sony and Marvel also executed a highly effective marketing campaign centered on mystery and anticipation. Secret casting choices — most notably Sadie Sink — sparked months of online speculation, while carefully controlled trailers revealed just enough to excite fans without giving away major surprises. The campaign kept the film at the center of social media conversation and broadened interest beyond core Marvel audiences.

The film also benefited from strong franchise positioning. Coming after a period of superhero fatigue and inconsistent Marvel releases, Brand New Day signaled a return to a more grounded, character-driven Spider-Man story. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film shifts the focus back to Peter Parker's relationships, personal responsibility, and street-level challenges while still delivering the spectacle audiences expect from the franchise. It also lays important groundwork for Marvel's future by introducing key characters and storylines that help bridge the MCU and the X-Men ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.

Audience reception reinforced the strong opening weekend. Critics awarded the film a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while moviegoers gave it a coveted "A" CinemaScore — one of the strongest indicators of positive word-of-mouth. Combined with exceptional social media sentiment and repeat viewing potential, those early reactions position Spider-Man: Brand New Day for a long and successful theatrical run.

Nolan’s epic adventure charts a course toward $1 billion

Despite the buzz around Spider-Man, The Odyssey continued its remarkable journey in its third weekend, adding another $51 million domestically while declining just 43% from the previous weekend — a strong hold for a blockbuster of this size.

The sustained performance underscores the film's exceptional word-of-mouth and broad audience appeal, particularly given its premium format success. Globally, the film is now less than $75 million away from the coveted $1 billion milestone, which it is expected to surpass in the coming days. In its third weekend, while it still skewed male (54%), it shifted a bit and more women showed up than its previous weekends.

One night to shine: Can One Night Only court audiences away from the big box office holdovers?

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to comfortably lead the box office again this weekend, there is one notable new wide release. One Night Only is an R-rated romantic comedy that follows two single strangers in New York City on the one night each year when premarital sex is legally permitted.

Early reviews have been positive, praising the film's clever premise, sharp social commentary, witty humor, and the chemistry between leads Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, and Maya Hawke, along with a supporting cast of recognizable faces. Although the film is generating positive buzz, opening weekend projections remain modest, in the $7–10 million range, reflecting the challenge of launching an original adult comedy against the momentum of two major blockbuster holdovers.

Also new this weekend is Super Troopers 3. Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, the R-rated film serves as the third installment in the cult-classic comedy franchise created by the Broken Lizard comedy troupe. The original premiered 25 years ago and took in $6M; the second installment arrived in theaters in 2018 and brought in $16M; and predictions for this year are in the $6-$10M range.
