With a massive footprint across more than 4,200 theaters, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie pushed its way to nearly $140M over the three-day weekend. That translated to a dominant 74% of admissions and 67% of total box office revenue — yet another clear signal that family-friendly titles continue to be the engine driving theater attendance. It’s an outstanding debut for the second installment in an animated franchise, reinforcing how valuable recognizable IP and multi-generational appeal are in today’s market.

When you factor in Hoppers, family-friendly films accounted for roughly 77% of all admissions this weekend. That’s a striking reminder of how much the industry is currently leaning on family audiences. Moviegoing as a shared, out-of-home activity — especially for families — remains one of the most reliable drivers of turnout.

A parent on our own team shared that “although the experience can feel like watching someone else play a video game, the 3D effects make it worth bringing your little one to the theater – even with the heftier ticket price.” Despite softer critic reviews, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is connecting where it matters most, earning an A- CinemaScore and signaling strong word-of-mouth and potential for solid holds in the coming weeks.

Relative wins for fresh faces: The Drama and A Great Awakening debut strong against family blockbuster tide

The Drama, starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, made its box office debut in third place with nearly $15M. The film’s timeliness and pre-release controversy, along with its knack for blending dark themes with romance and comedy, make it a hit for fans of A24’s style and one of the most talked-about releases of the year. Romantic comedy as a genre has struggled in recent years, but strong critical reception and a solid B CinemaScore from audiences position the film well for a steady second weekend, especially as counterprogramming to family-heavy fare.

Also entering the market was A Great Awakening, a faith-based historical drama centered on the relationship between George Whitefield and Benjamin Franklin. Playing in roughly half the theater count of The Drama, it brought in just over $2M. The film has seen a sharply divided response between critics and audiences, which is typical for the genre, though audience affinity can often outweigh critical sentiment over time.

Looking ahead, You, Me & Tuscany opens this weekend and is tracking for a modest debut, with projections under $10M. Starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, the film is targeting audiences looking for light, escapist romance.

With limited new competition, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to comfortably hold onto the top spot in its second weekend. Meanwhile, You, Me & Tuscany should compete for a place in the top five, though its upside may be capped by the immediate competition from The Drama, which already has a foothold with similar demographics.

Family franchises and adult originals: the dual engines propelling a post-pandemic boom

The cinema market right now is being driven by two key forces: family franchises delivering scale, and original, adult-skewing films (like The Drama) that can break through with strong reviews and word-of-mouth. The three-day box office take was more than double the previous weekend, and sits at over $2B year to date, up 23% from this time last year. Most impressively, it’s the best year to date box office since the pandemic. The continued balance between films that content different key audiences will be critical as we head into the early summer slate.

Speaking of which, the coming months are packed with major blockbusters, including several highly anticipated sequels and new projects from acclaimed directors like Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan. We anticipate the appeal of ‘something for everyone’ will pull even the most infrequent moviegoers into theaters.
