May is shaping up to be a terrific month at the box office. Month-to-date revenue is up 37% versus the same point last year and is pacing close to pre-pandemic levels. The year-to-date domestic box office is approaching $3B, putting 2026 on track to become the strongest theatrical year since the pandemic-era shutdowns and subsequent strike-related disruptions.

How did this weekend’s movies compete?

While there were several new releases, the biggest surprise came at the top of the admissions rankings: Michael, now in its third week, reclaimed the #1 spot, accounting for 25% of all admissions.

What makes the performance especially notable is how tightly grouped the top three films were in overall grosses, suggesting that audience composition — not just raw demand — likely played a major role.

  • Michael took in 25% of admissions (~3.15M) and 24% of the box office (~$37.9M).
  • The Devil Wears Prada 2 followed closely behind with 24% of admissions (~3.09M) and 26% of the box office (~$41.6M).
  • New release Mortal Kombat II opened with 23% of the admissions (~2.93M) and 24% of the box office (~$38.5M).

With the weekend coinciding with Mother’s Day, moviegoers appeared to gravitate toward the title that worked best as a broad, multi-generational outing. Mortal Kombat II, despite a strong debut, carries the limitations of an R-rating, narrowing its family appeal. The Devil Wears Prada 2, while PG-13 and performing very well, likely skewed more female and adult. Michael, meanwhile, seems to have emerged as the consensus choice that could satisfy nearly every demographic in the household — music fans, older audiences with nostalgia for Michael Jackson, and younger moviegoers drawn by the spectacle and soundtrack.

A tale of two scorecards: 'Mortal Kombat II' splits critics and audiences wide open

Mortal Kombat II opened in roughly 3,500 theaters — about 700 fewer than The Devil Wears Prada 2, and similar to Michael. Pulling in 24% at the box office, it marks an excellent debut for the latest installment in the action franchise. As predicted, the opening landed well above typical genre norms and nearly doubled the start of the 2021 film, which faced the dual challenges of pandemic-era attendance limitations and a simultaneous streaming release.

Audience and critic reactions were sharply divided: the film currently sits at a 65% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes versus a far stronger 90% audience score. Reviews have largely described it as a bloody, action-packed crowd-pleaser that significantly improves on the 2021 reboot, even if its narrative remains thin and chaotic. The strong audience reception suggests the franchise’s fan base remains highly engaged, particularly among younger male moviegoers.

Where did this weekend’s new releases rank in admissions and box office results?

Also opening this weekend was The Sheep Detectives, which debuted in fourth place with a solid start for a live action/animation hybrid. Hugh Jackman reads his sheep murder mysteries. When he’s found dead, the sheep recognize it as a murder and go about trying to solve the case.

While the opening falls slightly below the average for the genre, most comparable hybrids are based on powerhouse IP such as A Minecraft Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, or Alvin and the Chipmunks. The Sheep Detectives instead draws from the far lesser-known novel Three Bags Full, making the performance more impressive in context.

Critical reception has been outstanding, audience scores are excellent, and the film earned an A- CinemaScore — often a strong indicator of long-term playability. It also exceeded industry expectations and delivered the biggest non-Marvel opening of Hugh Jackman’s career. Strong family appeal and positive word of mouth should help this one develop real staying power — or perhaps staying “hooves.”

Billie's back and she's bigger than ever: 'Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour' hits theaters in 3D

Music also made an impact this weekend with the opening of Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft; The Tour (Live in 3D). The concert film premiered in just over 2,600 theaters and generated strong early reactions from fans and critics alike. It came in seventh overall in admissions, just behind holdouts The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary.

Co-directed by James Cameron, the film has been praised as an immersive and technically ambitious theatrical experience that uses 3D not as a gimmick, but as a way to place audiences directly inside the performance. Concert films continue to demonstrate that theatrical moviegoing is increasingly evolving into an “event-driven” business, where fandom and communal experiences can drive meaningful turnout beyond traditional blockbuster franchises.

This coming weekend doesn't see too many new titles coming out, so it’s all gearing up to Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start of summer. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu should perform well by normal blockbuster standards but likely below the peak levels historically associated with Star Wars: The Force Awakens or even Rogue One. Even so, with Grogu a hugely successful character for Disney, and Pedro Pascal becoming an even bigger star since the storyline premiered, all signs point to a successful $80M opening weekend.
