It was a great weekend for the movies, with Michael moonwalking across screens to beat estimates. The box office now stands at $2.5B—up 11% year over year—and is on pace to have the highest-grossing year since the pandemic and the subsequent writers’ strike that disrupted the industry.

Michael is a certifiable hit, grossing nearly $100M in its opening weekend and establishing itself as a posthumous cultural moment for the pop star. It took in a commanding 64% of all admissions.  The film has sharply divided critics and audiences, creating a pronounced “critics vs. fans” dynamic.

Moviegoers are embracing it—giving near-perfect scores for its entertainment value and musical spectacle—while many critics have pushed back, calling it a sanitized portrayal that sidesteps the more complicated aspects of Jackson’s legacy.

From an audience standpoint, the film skewed slightly male (55%), which is somewhat atypical for music biopics and suggests broader four-quadrant appeal driven by spectacle and nostalgia.

While most attendees were over 18, a notable 15% fell into the 2–17 range—reinforcing the enduring, cross-generational pull of Michael Jackson’s music and signaling that younger audiences are still highly engaged with legacy artists when the presentation feels eventized.

Hip-hop energy, Hitchcockian flair, and more

Two new entrants made the top 10 this week. First up is NBA Youngboy’s American Youngboy, a concert documentary following the superstar during his massive MASA (“Make America Slime Again”) tour. It’s directed by upstart Nico Ballesteros, whose first documentary (In Whose Name?) chronicled the life of Kanye West.

The film has generated viral buzz thanks to its high-energy screenings, with audiences turning theaters into full-on concert environments. Despite a limited release across just 583 theaters, it pulled in over $1M at the box office—an impressive per-theater average that underscores the strength of his fanbase.

It’s another example of how eventized, fan-driven content can outperform traditional expectations, especially when it leans into communal, in-theater experiences. In a marketplace where theater exhibitors are looking for ways to differentiate from streaming-at-home, this kind of “concert-as-cinema” model continues to show real upside.

The next new title in the top 10 is Over Your Dead Body.  It opened in limited release across roughly 1,500 theaters. Starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving, the remake of the Norwegian thriller The Trip blends dark comedy with violent twists as a dysfunctional couple’s murder plots collide with an unexpected external threat. Critical response has been generally positive, with praise for the film’s “Hitchcockian flair” and inventive set pieces, though some reviewers point out jarring inconsistencies between its comedic and brutal elements. Its performance will be worth watching as counterprogramming; films like this can build momentum through word-of-mouth if they connect with genre audiences.

Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary continues its impressive run in its sixth week, holding a top-three position in revenue. With over $300M domestically and more than double that worldwide, the film has firmly established itself as one of the year’s standout success stories. Given its less than $200M production budget, it’s a big win for Amazon and a strong example of how positive word-of-mouth and critical support can sustain a film well beyond its opening window—especially in the sci-fi space, where audience engagement tends to be deeper and more durable.

High fashion, an Orwell parable—and a few sheep detectives

Looking ahead, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is poised to be the next major release, with projections in the $80–$100M range. Early reviews suggest a crowd-pleasing sequel that updates the original’s themes for a digital-first media landscape and influencer culture. If those projections hold, it could tap into both nostalgia and contemporary relevance, an increasingly effective combination for sequels targeting adult audiences.

Also entering in limited release is Animal Farm, which is tracking below $5M. The film appears to be struggling with critics (currently hovering around a 23% Rotten Tomatoes score), with many pointing to its softened, more family-friendly approach as a departure from the darker political edge of the Orwellian source material. That tonal oddness may limit its appeal among both core fans and broader audiences, despite a stellar voice cast that includes Seth Rogen, Laverne Cox, and Woody Harrelson.

The market is fast moving into the summer blockbuster corridor, and momentum is building quickly. Family-friendly and event-driven titles continue to anchor the box office, with The Sheep Detectives on deck as the next potential breakout. Early reviews position it as a smart, broadly appealing hybrid—mixing the charm of Babe with the puzzle-box appeal of Knives Out.

Further into the slate, Mortal Kombat II and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu signal a return to franchise-heavy programming, reinforcing a key industry dynamic:

While originals and mid-budget films can break through, it’s still recognizable IP and four-quadrant storytelling that will define the scale of the summer box office. May, in particular, is shaping up to be a pivotal month, setting the tone for what could be a very robust theatrical season.
