Summer is just getting started, and it's already heating up at the box office, led by the premiere of Jurassic World: Rebirth. The latest installment in the action-packed franchise roared to over $92 million in ticket sales during the 3-day weekend (Friday through Sunday). On its opening weekend, the film accounted for 63% of total admissions and 59% of the weekend’s box office revenue. Notably, the film launched with a special early 5-day release, pulling in nearly $150 million from Wednesday through Sunday.
F1: The Movie also continued to draw a strong audience, capturing nearly 2 million tickets and 17% of total box office revenue in its second week, despite being up against such a strong title as Jurassic World. Thanks to the sport’s massive global fanbase, the film has already grossed nearly $400 million worldwide in just two weeks—surpassing $100 million domestically.
Family-friendly titles are holding their ground as well. How to Train Your Dragon remains in the top three for the fourth consecutive week, bringing in over $11 million as audiences continue to show love for Toothless. Disney’s Elio earned a solid 4% share of both admissions and box office revenue.
The rest of the top 10 reinforces a clear trend: with the exception of The Materialists, it’s remakes, franchises, and familiar names that are filling seats. Audiences showed up for 28 Years Later, Lilo & Stitch, M3GAN 2.0, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and This Is Spinal Tap (1984) RE:2025.
Looking Ahead: It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Superman!
The tyrannosaurus rex may face some serious competition this weekend as James Gunn’s highly anticipated reboot of Superman takes flight. Opening weekend forecasts are landing between $100 million and $130 million, though insiders are keeping expectations closer to $100 million. With a production budget of $225 million and hopes of revitalizing the DC Universe, there's a lot riding on the Man of Steel’s return. Early reviews are promising, with an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
