Final Destination: Bloodlines Ignites Box Office as Summer Kicks Off Early! | Weekend of May 16th, 2025

What a fantastic weekend at the box office, leading us straight into Memorial Day! Final Destination: Bloodlines absolutely shattered expectations, propelling the total box office back into the $100M+ arena – an exciting achievement. Year-to-date, the box office stands strong at over $2.6 Billion, a healthy +15% increase from a year ago. Even more impressive, May 2025 is currently pacing a fantastic +27% ahead of last May!
Final Destination: Bloodlines' opening was nothing short of sensational, delivering well above initial projections. This sixth installment of the horror franchise received strong critical reviews, proving that fresh, well-executed content can still draw massive crowds.
Meanwhile, Sinners continues to be a remarkable success story for the box office. Now in its fifth week, it brought in over $15M and, notably, expanded its theater count – a rare and impressive feat for a film at this stage of its run. This movie truly has legs!
We also saw some interesting dynamics. While Hurry Up Tomorrow, The Weeknd's companion piece, didn't quite hit its stride, the limited release of Friendship (a black comedy starring Paul Rudd, Tim Robinson, and Kate Mara) managed to bring in $1.4M from just 60 theaters. With excellent reviews, Friendship is poised for a successful wider release this week, adding a promising new option to the Memorial Day lineup.
Looking Ahead: A Blockbuster Memorial Day Weekend!
And now, we've arrived at Memorial Day Weekend – the unofficial start of summer and historically one of the strongest weekends for moviegoing. This weekend promises to be a powerhouse with two highly anticipated releases:
- Lilo & Stitch is set for a massive opening, with early predictions soaring to $120M+ for the 4-day holiday. Its incredible pre-sale numbers are the highest for any PG-rated title in 2025 to date, demonstrating a huge built-in nostalgic appeal for Millennial parents who grew up with the animated original.
- Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning is expected to bring in another $80M+ for the 4-day holiday. Tom Cruise continues to be an unparalleled champion for the theatrical experience, consistently delivering thrilling spectacles and reminding audiences why movies belong on the big screen.
May is set to close out with tremendous strength, and the momentum will undoubtedly carry into June with exciting titles like Karate Kid: Legends and M3gan 2.0. July is shaping up to be an incredibly robust month with blockbusters like Jurassic World, Superman, Fantastic Four First Steps, F1 The Movie, and Smurfs, ensuring something for every age group and promising a truly vibrant summer at the movies!
