Box Office Keeps Soaring as Lilo & Stitch Lead the Charge | Weekend of May 30th, 2025

The box office is on a phenomenal run, delivering yet another strong weekend! Year-to-date figures show a healthy +27% increase from last year, and Quarter 2 of 2025 is already an incredible +83% ahead of a year ago! When compared to the three years before the pandemic (2017-2019), the gap is now less than -9%, and May's performance is just -7% from the pre-pandemic average. This truly underscores the remarkable recovery and health of the movie industry. May's success was fueled by a strong lineup of broadly appealing titles and the incredible staying power of Sinners, which continues to deliver, now in its seventh week and still a top 10 performer!
As expected, Lilo & Stitch continued its dominant run at the box office, holding the #1 spot with a fantastic 46% of admissions and 42% of revenue. Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning also maintained a very strong hold, securing the #2 position, demonstrating its widespread appeal. Both films are showing excellent consistency in drawing audiences to theaters.
This past weekend welcomed several new releases, with Karate Kid: Legends making a solid debut at #3 in both dollars and admissions. While its $20.3M opening was slightly below initial expectations, it's still a strong performance, and audience reviews are showing more enthusiasm than critics.
Bring Her Back from A24 is definitely one to watch (but also one to steer clear for tension-haters). This film performed better than anticipated and is gaining significant momentum through positive word-of-mouth. With a modest production cost of $4.5M and strong critical reviews, it has the potential to become a true cult hit.
Interestingly, The Accountant 2 made it into the top 10 for admissions despite being #11 in dollars, indicating a strong audience draw. Also noteworthy was J-Hope Tour: Hope on the Stage in Japan : Live Viewing, a special event that impressively made it to #10 in dollars due to premium ticket pricing, even with a limited theatrical release.
Looking Ahead: Exciting New Releases on the Horizon Continues!
This coming weekend brings a variety of intriguing new titles. The Phoenician Scheme expands into wide release after a strong limited run, promising a quirky and visually appealing Wes Anderson experience.
Even more exciting is From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. This spin-off, while not featuring Keanu Reeves, stars the talented Ana De Armas and could reach as high as $30M. We'll be watching to see how this action-packed addition performs.
Also opening wide this weekend is The Ritual, a drama-horror film based on a true story that inspired The Exorcist, and the anime sequel Dan Da Dan Evil Eye. Both have the potential to surprise and further energize the box office.
With a compelling mix of holdovers and promising new content, we anticipate another very strong weekend at the box office!
