Box Office Booms: Sinners Leads Admissions as Star Wars Re-Release Claims #2 In Box Office | Weekend of April 25th, 2025

The box office continues its fantastic run, showcasing incredible momentum! As of today, year-to-date grosses are a remarkable +12% ahead of last year. Even more impressively, the second quarter's performance is already double what it was at this point last year! This surge is fueled by fresh, well-received content that's consistently bringing audiences back to the big screen. Notably, the top 10 is dominated by recent releases, with only the ever-popular A Minecraft Movie (now in its fourth week) representing films a month or older.
This past weekend saw Sinners take the #1 spot in admissions, drawing a nice 29% of the total audience. This incredible performance, just a -5% drop in revenue from its debut, underscores the film's strong word-of-mouth and continued critical acclaim (holding at an impressive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Adding to the excitement, we saw a surprising and welcome return to the top ranks: Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (in a 20th-anniversary re-release) landed at #2 in dollars and #3 in admissions! This demonstrates the enduring power of beloved franchises to draw audiences back to the theater, even amidst strong new releases.
The highly anticipated The Accountant 2 also made a strong debut, edging out Star Wars in admissions to claim the #2 admissions spot, while securing #3 in revenue. This indicates a solid start for the sequel and strong audience interest.
Until Dawn, based on the popular video game, also premiered successfully, landing at #5 in admissions and delivering a quality $8M+ opening, right in line with expectations.
Rounding out the exciting new entries in the top 10 was the re-release of Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII. This unique cinematic event, showcasing a legendary 1971 concert in IMAX theaters, impressively secured a spot in the top 10 for revenue despite its limited release in just 678 locations, proving the power of compelling and unique content to draw dedicated audiences.
Looking Ahead:
This weekend is set to be another blockbuster with the highly anticipated release of Thunderbolts! Early buzz and predictions point to a massive $75M+ opening. As the only major new wide release, Thunderbolts has the potential to soar even higher, further fueling the box office's incredible second-quarter surge!
