Hoppers bounced to the top of the box office this week. It debuted with the best opening weekend for a Pixar original since Coco in 2017, garnering 50% of the domestic box office and 50% of admissions.

Although critical reception remains positive, with a 93% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, parents are quick to warn that the predator-prey dynamics are scary for younger audiences.

Together with GOAT, which kept its place in top four, giving family-friendly features a 56% hold over admissions.

Something old, something new: THE BRIDE! resurrects Frankenstein with $7M debut

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut with a feminist retelling of the classic monster story has generated solid social media buzz. THE BRIDE! opened soft by horror standards but is bolstered by a highly regarded ensemble cast, led by Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, whose “tour de force” performances as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-esque couple have drawn strong praise.

While some critics felt the performances were “too much” or the characters not especially memorable, fans are describing it as what Joker: Folie à Deux desperately wished it was. Overall, the cast is widely seen as a highlight, reinforced by Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard.

There’s no kill like overkill: 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle' re-enters the box office top ten

After a theatrical pause, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle re-entered 837 theaters last weekend. While breaking the traditional theater-to-streaming norms, the second theatrical release gave fans another chance to see the film in premium large-format auditoriums and it paid off.

Looking ahead, this weekend’s only wide release, Reminders of Him, targets adult audiences. Based on the bestselling novel of the same title, it is the third adaption from author Colleen Hoover to come out in the past 19 months. Culture map calls it a “competently made film,” that doesn’t “try to force any of the key moments down the audience’s throat,” notable for a romance.

Project Hail Mary opens March 20. Based on Andy Weir’s widely acclaimed scifi novel, the film is reported to be a faithful adaptation that captures the “heart” and, in many opinions, the “spirit” of the source material—positioning it as a key potential breakout for the spring box office.

Joining Project Hail Mary on March 20 is Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which is already finding streaming success on Disney+ before its theatrical release. “A Special Look” ranks high as the second most-watched release on Disney+ in the United States, boding well for its debut in theaters.

The 2019 original was made for just $6 million but grossed $57.6 million worldwide, making it highly profitable and justifying the sequel seven years later.

All in, the box office sits at nearly $1.3 billion in ticket sales, a 10% increase from this time last year.
